Match preview: Leeds United - Arsenal

It doesn't get any easier for the Gunners in the tough festive period, with Leeds United the latest in a line of clubs vying for their position in the league. Leeds themselves were once Champions League contenders and, while they won't be getting back there this year, are seen by many as an upwardly mobile club in this new era despite a patchy start to the 2021/22 season.

Arsenal hoping to put another strong run together

Arsenal's story so far this season really has been one of differing form. They started with the huge disappointment of three straight defeats - albeit via a tough start that included Chelsea and Manchester City in their first three games - followed by a consistent string of performances against teams in the lower half of the league. Then this too hit a stumbling block when they came up against rivals like Manchester United and Everton.

Leeds are an interesting case; their league position would appear to suggest they're one of the more comfortable games on paper. Travelling to the atmospheric Elland Road ground is never easy for any team though, and some would argue they're currently in a false position. If Arsenal want to ensure a good festive run of games starts here, they'll have to be extra wary of their eager opponents.

Will Aubameyang return?

The Arsenal forward and club captain has been absent for two games now and stripped of the captaincy following an alleged disciplinary breach. Mikel Arteta seems to have retained the support of at least the majority of his team over the matter and they're more than capable of winning games without him. Surely, though, the former club talisman and top scorer can't remain on the side-lines for too long?

It will make interesting viewing when Arteta does decide to bring one of his best players back into the fold, having made sure by now the player realises there's no room for a big ego in this dressing room. If it is to be against Leeds, some additional viewers may tune in to see the drama unfold.
